The great salt lake is a place of unearthly, surreal beauty. I don't know if it was the still air or the mineral heavy water, but it seemed to be the most serene body of water i've ever seen. Over the last day's drive i'd been re-discovering the awe inspiring scale of the west. Now i was in a valley that extended well past where i expected the horizon, and inlayed across it's floor was a lifeless mirror stretching for miles.

Day one recap

Left three hours late (hey, that's just moving for ya). Had a nice picnick at the truck stop. Drove over a nail. Unpacked entire trunk to get the spare out. meanwhile Kate and Bridget pulled some u-turns in the truck and eventually crossed the highway on foot. Re-packed car in f'd up way to fit the tire in the trunk. Met a state trooper. Got to the tire place ten minutes after they closed. Went down the street and unpacked the car to get the tire out and patch it. Re-packed again as it started to rain. Crashed at a cheap hotel. Planned a twelve hour catch-up drive. Woke up early to buy a tire at Wal-Mart.
